Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced the need to move the capital from Tehran. The Fars news agency reported the head of state's statement, as reported by RBC.
According to the president, the project's implementation was previously considered impossible due to a lack of sufficient budget funding. "Today, the reality is that we no longer have a choice; moving the capital is a necessary measure," Pezeshkian emphasized.
One of the key reasons for the decision was worsening natural and environmental problems. As CNN reported on November 17, citing the National Weather Forecasting Center of Iran's meteorological organization, rainfall across the country has decreased by approximately 89% compared to the long-term average. According to the channel, this autumn in Iran has been the driest in 50 years.
The President also drew attention to a number of chronic problems facing Tehran:
– acute shortage of water;
– high air pollution;
– soil subsidence.
The issue of moving the capital is not new to Iran. Back in 2013, the Islamic Council approved a similar plan. Furthermore, in 2024, Masoud Pezeshkian already spoke in favor of moving the country's administrative center closer to the southern coast.
