The Musical Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria, received the International Opera Prize in the category "Best Opera House." The awards ceremony took place on the evening of November 13, 2025, at the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center in Athens, home of the Hellenic National Opera.
The award celebrates the Viennese theater's return to the global cultural scene after a two-year restoration. In the 2024–25 season, the "Die Staatsoper" presented a bold and ambitious program spanning more than four centuries of musical history, a feat highly praised by the award's organizing committee. Competitors for the title of best opera house included the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Gothenburg Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Zurich Opera House, and La Scala Milan.
The award for Best New Production went to Leoš Janáček's opera "The Travels of Mr. Broucek," performed jointly by the Berlin State Opera, the Brno National Theatre, and the Teatro Real in Madrid. Modest Mussorgsky's opera "Khovanshchina," directed by British director Simon McBurney at the Salzburg Easter Festival, was also among the nominees.
The Janáček Music Festival was named Festival of the Year, having previously won the title in 2019. German Klaus Guth was named Director of the Year for his production of Richard Strauss's opera Salome at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
The International Opera Prize has been awarded since 2013 and is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the world of opera. Previous winners have included the Bavarian State Opera (two-time winner), the Frankfurt Opera, the Komische Oper in Berlin (two-time winner), and the national academic opera and ballet theaters in Lviv and Odesa.
