A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Turkish city of Balikesir on Tuesday night, according to the Turkish newspaper Habertürk, citing Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). The epicenter was located in the Sındırı district at a depth of 5.9 kilometers.
Tremors were felt in many provinces of the Marmara and Aegean regions, including Izmir, Bursa, Istanbul, Tekirdağ, Kocaeli, and Sakarya. According to videos posted on social media, the earthquake violently shook streetlights in Balikesir, and motorcycles parked on the street nearly lost their balance. Hangers and furniture were observed swaying in stores in Bursa.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that no one was injured in the earthquake, but three buildings and one store were destroyed. The city also experienced a temporary power outage, which was restored within a few hours. As a result, classes in Balikesir schools were cancelled for the day.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his best wishes to the citizens affected by the earthquake and noted that relevant units, especially AFAD, continue to thoroughly survey and monitor the situation on the ground.
