On October 26 at 5:00 PM, the Sadriddin Aini Tajik State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater will host a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "La Traviata" in Italian, according to the theater's press service.
The modern history of La Traviata productions on the Tajik stage began in 2022, when the opera was first performed in its original version, featuring Italian artists. The musical director at that time was Maestro Delfo Menicucci, a professor at the Milan Conservatory.
This year, "La Traviata" will be the first production of the theater's 88th season. The performance will be conducted by Azamkhon Akhmedov, a guest from Uzbekistan and a leading conductor at the Alisher Navoi State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Uzbekistan, a graduate of the Mariinsky Theater internship, and a student of People's Artist of Russia Valery Gergiev. Azamkhon Akhmedov has previously collaborated with the Ayni State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Uzbekistan, conducting the ballet "Giselle" (2024) and serving as the musical director of the "Evening of Bollywood Film Music" project (2024–2025).
The title role of Violetta will be performed by Libuše Santorisová, a long-term collaborator from the Czech Republic. Her vocal career began with performances of the works of the distinguished Czech composer Leoš Januček. Libuše was educated in Italy, studying at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and interning at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
The singer subsequently performed in the United States at the New York Lyric Opera, where her performances of Magda in "Die Swallow," Cio-Cio-san in Puccini's "Madama Butterfly," and Sieglinde in Wagner's "Die Walküre" received acclaim from audiences and critics. She also performed at Carnegie Hall alongside the world-renowned José Carreras. In 2024, Libuse participated in a concert in China dedicated to Italian music, which attracted over 10,000 spectators. She has sung approximately 40 leading roles in opera productions. Santorisova made her Tajik stage debut in June 2025 in Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin."
The role of Alfred will be played by leading Russian tenor Manuchehr Rakhmonov. The production will also feature the theater's finest performers: Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan Sodik Nurulloev, Sharofat Usmonzoda, Maria Mirzoeva, Khayotjon Khamrokhonov, Safarali Solehov, Nurafshon Nurullozoda, and Komron Sodikov.
The performance features the entire theater's ensemble: opera soloists, the Academic Choir under the direction of Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan Elena Tilloeva, and the ballet company (choreographed by Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan Alexander Bakhman). The director is the theater's chief director, Sukhrob Usmonov.
The opera's plot is based on Alexandre Dumas the Younger's novel "La Dame aux Camélias." The protagonist, the beautiful Violetta, meets her true love, Alfredo, but is forced by public pressure to leave him. Their subsequent meeting years later proves tragic, and the opera ends with the heroine's death. "La Traviata" is considered a masterpiece of world opera, and its performance in the original language demonstrates the artistry of the performers.
Tickets cost 50 somoni. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office by calling 2216291 or online at Echipta.tj.
