The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has launched a ground operation to take control of Gaza and has secured the city's outskirts, IDF spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin announced. This was reported by Interfax, citing the Jerusalem Post.
He confirmed that the Israeli Ministry of Defense will call up approximately 60,000 additional reservists, with draft notices to be sent out this week. Defrin added that another 20,000 draft notices will be sent out later in August.
The general added that the IDF is working to ensure that Gazans can evacuate to safe places and receive humanitarian aid and medical care.
On August 8, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed that the Security Cabinet had approved his plan for the IDF's takeover of Gaza. The operation's objectives include disarming Hamas, returning all hostages, demilitarizing the Strip, establishing Israeli control over security in the Strip, and forming a civilian government without Hamas or the Palestinian National Authority.
These plans have drawn criticism both within Israel and abroad.
