Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip have resulted in the destruction of over a thousand mosques and damage to Christian churches, Mahmoud al-Habash, the Palestinian president's religious affairs adviser, told RIA Novosti.
"More than a thousand mosques have been destroyed in the Gaza Strip. Three Christian churches and several religious schools have been attacked," al-Habash stated. He also noted that dozens of mosques have been attacked by the Israeli army and settlers in the West Bank.
The course of the conflict
The escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict began on October 7, 2023, following a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip and the infiltration of Hamas militants into Israeli territory. In response, Israel announced the launch of Operation Iron Swords and a complete lockdown of the Gaza Strip.
According to various reports, more than 62,000 Palestinians and approximately 1,500 Israelis were killed during the fighting. The conflict extended beyond the Palestinian-Israeli standoff: shelling spread to Lebanon and Yemen, and also triggered rocket attacks between Israel and Iran.
International reaction
The international community continues to discuss ways to end the conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron previously proposed forming an international coalition under the auspices of the UN to stabilize the situation in Gaza and prevent further escalation.
