Foreigners working under patents will be prohibited from working as taxi drivers in St. Petersburg until the end of 2025, the city administration press service reported on Monday, Interfax reports.
The corresponding decree was signed by Governor Alexander Beglov and published on the Smolny website.
"The Governor of St. Petersburg (…) has made a decision to impose a ban on the employment of foreign citizens by business entities who carry out labor activities on the basis of patents in the type of economic activity "activities of passenger taxis and rented passenger cars with a driver" (…) for the period until the end of 2025," the report says.
It specifies that the decision is aimed at “improving the quality and safety of taxi services and creating additional employment opportunities for Russian citizens.”
The resolution will come into force after 10 days. The company will be able to terminate current employment relationships and attract new employees within three months.
"The introduction of a ban for the specified time period (until the end of 2025) will allow us to practically assess its socio-economic impact on the life of the city and make an informed decision on the need to apply similar measures in 2026," the statement says.
According to the document, the Labor and Employment Committee will have until November to submit proposals to Beglov on whether to extend the ban for next year.
