For the first time in nearly 20 years, China's global image has surpassed that of the United States. These are the findings of a new Pew Research Center survey. As Bloomberg reports, the study covered 36 countries. In most of them, including traditional US allies such as Canada, Australia, France, and Germany, residents rate China higher than the United States. The gap in China's favor is particularly pronounced in the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. Only in six countries—India, Japan, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Israel, and Poland—did the US rate higher than China.
Among 20 countries with comparable data available from 2023 onward, nearly half of respondents expressed a positive view of China. The share of positive assessments of the United States was only 36%. Meanwhile, in a number of countries, particularly in Europe, positive perceptions of China reached record or near-record levels, the researchers note.
