At least 17 people were killed and approximately 90 injured in a massive attack on Kyiv that began on the evening of July 1, Ukrainian authorities reported.
According to city authorities, missile and drone strikes caused destruction at more than 30 sites across all districts of the capital. Residential buildings, an ambulance substation, a hotel, and other facilities were damaged. Numerous fires broke out at the sites, and rescuers continue to clear the rubble.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the injured included drivers and ambulance personnel working at the damaged substation in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Fires, partial building collapses, and instances of residents being trapped in their apartments were reported in various parts of the city.
Kyiv City Military Administration Head Timur Tkachenko stated that damage was recorded in more than 30 locations. He claimed that drones attacked the city from several directions simultaneously.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that Russian forces struck Kyiv with long-range precision weapons in response to alleged "terrorist attacks" on civilian infrastructure. The ministry reported that the targets included military industrial facilities, fuel and energy facilities, and military airfield infrastructure in several regions of Ukraine.
The previous evening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing intelligence data, warned of a possible massive strike on the country's territory. Following the attack, Kyiv authorities declared July 3 a day of mourning for the victims.
