A day after passing a joint resolution calling on the US president to stop using armed force to wage war against Iran, the US Senate rejected a similar initiative, drawing praise from President Donald Trump, the Republican majority, Interfax reports.
The final vote was 47 in favor, 50 against, with one Republican senator, Rand Paul, abstaining.
Media outlets note that the Senate thus abandoned its criticism of the president's actions after Trump attacked senators, including four Republicans, who voted for the previous resolution.
Trump, commenting on the results in Truth Social, noted the change in position of Paul, as well as Senator Bill Cassidy, and thanked the Republicans.
"This vote gives Iran a warning!" Trump wrote.
Wednesday's vote marked the 11th time since the start of the year that the Senate has weighed in on military powers in Iran, according to CNN's tally.
As reported, on Wednesday night, after the Senate approved a resolution calling on Trump to stop using American military forces to wage war against Iran by a 50-48 vote, the president said it was untimely and senseless, and that senators who supported the initiative had thus aided Washington's opponents by undermining its position in negotiations with Tehran.
