Representatives of the foreign affairs ministries of the CIS member states held inter-MFA consultations on June 23 in Minsk on interaction on the agenda of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the press service of the Organization's Executive Committee reported.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, as well as the CIS Executive Committee.
During the consultations, participants emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of the UN as a key mechanism for multilateral cooperation and response to global challenges in the context of the emerging multipolar world order. The parties also exchanged information on national priorities and initiatives they plan to present during the upcoming General Assembly session.
Special attention was given to UN reform, including the Security Council. Participants noted that any initiatives in this area must enjoy the consensus support of member states and fully take into account their interests. It was emphasized that these reforms should enhance the authority and effectiveness of the UN without undermining its intergovernmental nature and the existing distribution of powers among its main organs.
Furthermore, the parties expressed support for streamlining UN activities by eliminating duplicative functions and redundant structures. They also emphasized that this process should be transparent, overseen by member states, and take into account the need to maintain a balance between the organization's key areas of activity.
Following the meeting, the participants agreed to continue regular consultations on issues on the UN agenda, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
