The US Senate has approved a resolution, previously passed by the House of Representatives, calling on President Donald Trump to cease the use of American military forces in combat against Iran, The Hill reports.
This is a joint resolution of both houses of the US Congress. The document does not have the status of law and does not require the president's signature to take effect.
Following the Senate vote, 50 lawmakers supported the initiative, while 48 voted against. Among Republicans, Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Bill Cassidy voted in favor of the resolution. The only Democrat to vote against the document was John Fetterman.
Earlier this month, the House of Representatives approved the resolution by 215 votes. 208 members of Congress opposed the initiative.
The publication notes that Republicans who supported the document voted last week for a similar resolution proposed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. However, it failed to secure enough votes to pass.
In recent months, debates have continued in the United States about whether the president can conduct military action against another country for an extended period without congressional approval.
The Donald Trump administration believes that current legislation does not contain such restrictions. At the same time, many members of Congress maintain that such actions require approval from not only the executive branch but also the legislative branch.
Under the War Powers Act of 1973, the president is required to end a military operation within 60 days unless Congress declares war or passes a law authorizing the use of military force.
The law also provides for a one-time 30-day extension of this deadline. To do so, the president must notify Congress in writing of the need for additional time to ensure the safe withdrawal of American troops.
To date, the US Congress has not approved the use of military force against Iran, and the White House has not publicly stated its intention to seek such authorization.
