Since the beginning of this year, five cases of parents marrying off their daughters under the age of consent have been registered in Dushanbe. Criminal cases have been opened in all of the identified cases, according to the Dushanbe Department of Internal Affairs.
Law enforcement agencies noted that, according to Article 13 of the Family Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, the age of marriage is set at 18. Only in exceptional cases, by court order, can it be lowered by one year.
At the same time, analysis shows that some parents deliberately violate legal requirements and marry off their daughters before they have reached the age established by law.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, five similar cases have been registered in the capital this year. Criminal cases have been opened against the parents under Article 168 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan. An investigation is currently underway.
The agency also noted that criminal liability is provided not only for the marriage of minors, but also for conducting a marriage with a person under the age of marriage, as well as for marrying a minor.
Since the beginning of the year, Dushanbe law enforcement agencies have registered nine such crimes. Criminal cases have been opened for each of them under Article 169 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan.
In this regard, the Dushanbe Department of Internal Affairs has appealed to citizens, particularly parents and those involved in organizing and concluding marriages, to strictly comply with legal requirements to ensure the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of young women.
