UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the news of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, Interfax reports.
According to a statement released by the UN press service on behalf of the head of the organization, the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran provides for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and the creation of a framework for further negotiations.
According to the UN Secretary-General, the agreement could be an important step towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
António Guterres also expressed gratitude to the regional states that supported the negotiation process. The statement noted that the UN chief praised the constructive role of Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, as well as other regional countries, in facilitating the negotiations that led to the peace agreement.
The Secretary-General expressed hope that the agreements reached would form the basis for a broader political settlement. He also reaffirmed the United Nations' readiness to support the parties' efforts to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace.
Earlier on Sunday, António Guterres issued a separate statement condemning Israeli strikes on Beirut, which he said occurred despite the ongoing ceasefire.
