The official opening of the Fourth International High-Level Conference on the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028," will take place in Dushanbe on May 26. The forum is being held as part of the Dushanbe Water Process and brings together representatives of the international community to discuss key issues on the global water agenda.
The opening ceremony will take place at the Kokhi Somon complex. High-level delegations from UN member states, representatives of United Nations agencies, international and regional organizations, international financial institutions, the diplomatic corps, scientific and academic circles, the private sector, civil society, youth and women's organizations, and development partners will participate in the event.
The conference, taking place from May 25 to 28, continues the global initiatives of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in the field of water diplomacy. The Dushanbe Water Process, initiated by the Government of Tajikistan jointly with the UN, has become an international platform for promoting dialogue and joint action on water resources in recent years.
Today's program includes an opening ceremony, high-level plenary sessions, thematic sessions, and an international exhibition. Participants will focus on ensuring continuity between the 2023 UN Water Conference and the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, advancing international cooperation, attracting investment in the water sector, strengthening sustainable water management, and accelerating the achievement of water-related Sustainable Development Goals.
Thematic discussions will cover the topics of "Water for People," "Water for Prosperity," and "Water for the Planet." Participants will also discuss international cooperation, multilateral processes, and mobilizing financial resources for water projects.
The conference is expected to become an international platform for developing joint solutions to overcome contemporary challenges related to climate change, water scarcity, sanitation, and sustainable development.
On the eve of the official opening of the forum on May 25, Dushanbe hosted pre-conference forums, thematic and parallel events, expert meetings, youth and women's sessions, cultural programs, and a Water Festival, bringing together participants and guests of the international forum.
The conference will include an international exhibition dedicated to modern technologies, innovations, and initiatives in the field of rational use of water resources, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
On May 28, study tours and field trips are planned for international participants to study Tajikistan's experience in water resources management, hydropower, and climate change adaptation.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, the Fourth International High-Level Conference is being covered by approximately 400 representatives of domestic and international media, including over 100 foreign journalists from leading global news agencies, television channels, and print media. Among them are representatives of the Chinese Xinhua News Agency, Al Jazeera, Reuters, the French publications Le Monde and L'Express, and other international media.
For journalists, Kokhi Somon has a modern press center equipped with high-speed internet, computer equipment, recording and live broadcasting equipment, and facilities for interviews and briefings.
Hosting the Fourth Dushanbe Water Decade Conference confirms Tajikistan's growing role in advancing the global water agenda and strengthening international cooperation for sustainable development.
In addition, more than 150 volunteers have been involved in organizing and hosting the forum, assisting with accompanying delegations and guests, coordinating events, working with participants, and providing organizational support at the conference venues.
