US President Donald Trump was urgently escorted out of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner following a shooting, RIA Novosti reported, citing a broadcast of the event.
The dinner was held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, but it was abruptly interrupted after attendees heard several gunshots. Those present were asked to leave the room. Secret Service agents armed with rifles rushed onto the stage where the president was standing, after which Trump, surrounded by law enforcement, was escorted from the room.
Participants in the event reportedly heard between five and eight gunshots. CNN, citing a Secret Service spokesperson, reported that security guards managed to "stop" the gunman. Media reports indicate the suspect was armed with a shotgun and attempted to break through security. He fired at a Secret Service officer, but the bullet struck his body armor.
The Secret Service reported that the incident occurred near the main security checkpoint. One person was detained.
Trump himself later confirmed the arrest of the shooter on his social network Truth Social.
"The shooter has been detained, I recommended: 'let everything take its course,'" he wrote.
According to media reports, the US president and other members of his administration are safe. No one was injured in the incident. Trump himself confirmed this information.
The event was rescheduled for a later date. The President also announced a speech at the White House dedicated to the incident.
