Today marks the fifth day of the war between Israel and the United States against Iran. On Wednesday morning, the Israeli army launched several strikes on security headquarters in Tehran, as well as on Shiite militant group Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, the air force targeted Iranian security command centers. The statement stated that these command centers were used by the Iranian regime to maintain control throughout the country. Furthermore, the Israeli military stated that the strikes targeted missile launchers and other systems.
At the same time, Israeli strikes targeted Shiite Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the attacks killed six people and wounded eight.
Lebanese media reports that Israeli forces hit a hotel in a Beirut suburb and a four-story building in the eastern city of Baalbek.
The mayor of Baalbek said the building was occupied only by civilians.
At the same time, the IDF claims to be striking Hezbollah targets, which the Israeli military says continues to participate in Iran's campaign and fire rockets into Israel.
The Iranian military responded by launching drones and missiles at Israeli territory and at US military bases located in other countries in the Persian Gulf region.
According to the Qatari Ministry of Defense, one of the Iranian missiles aimed at Qatar was intercepted by air defense systems.
The second missile hit the US Al Udeid Air Base, which is the largest US military base in the region.
Later, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' aerospace forces fired more than 40 missiles at American and Israeli targets.
The agency said in a statement that details of the operation would be released later.
The commander of US forces in the Middle East, Admiral Brad Cooper, reported that American military personnel have hit about 2,000 targets in Iran.
He said the United States had severely weakened Iran's air defense system and destroyed hundreds of Iranian ballistic missiles, launchers, and drones.
"The first day of this operation was almost twice as large as the first day of strikes on Iraq in 2003, and we continue to strike Iran around the clock," Admiral Cooper said.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that any new leader of Iran would be a target for assassination.
According to him, the Israel Defense Forces is ready to use all necessary means.
Israeli media quoted the minister as saying that any new leader appointed in Iran would be considered a target for assassination.
The Iranian television channel Iran International reported that 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as Iran's new Supreme Leader.
It is reported that this decision was made by the Council of Experts, which includes 88 representatives of the Shiite clergy.
A farewell ceremony for Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 as a result of the initial US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, will begin in Tehran on Wednesday evening.
According to Iranian media, the farewell ceremony will begin at 10:00 pm local time and last three days.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will reportedly be buried in his hometown of Mashhad.
Meanwhile, the United States-based Human Rights Activist News Agency reports that at least 1,097 civilians have been killed in Iran since the war began.
According to the organization, 181 children under ten years of age were among the dead.
It is also reported that more than 5,400 people were injured.
Another 880 reports of fatalities are currently being investigated.
