On the tenth day of the war between the US, Israel, and Iran, fighting continues, and the situation in the Middle East remains tense. Bombings continue in the Persian Gulf region, with strikes by both sides hitting both military and energy facilities.
According to Iranian state media, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli airstrikes, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been appointed the new Supreme Leader. He was elected by the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 senior clerics authorized to select the country's Supreme Leader.
Iranian President Mesoud Pezeshkian congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his election. In his address, he stated that overcoming existing challenges is possible thanks to the new leader's "wise leadership," as well as the atmosphere of public trust, solidarity, and widespread resistance. Pezeshkian wished the new leader success in preserving the country's unity and building an independent and progressive Iran.
US President Donald Trump, for his part, stated that Iran's new leader "won't last long" unless he receives US approval. In an interview with ABC News, Trump said the new leader "will have to get our approval," adding that otherwise, he "won't last long." According to Trump, the US wants to avoid a situation where the issue has to be revisited every ten years.
The fighting has had a significant impact on global markets. Amid the war, the price of oil exceeded $100 per barrel for the first time since 2022. In one day, oil prices rose by approximately 20% due to concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could drag on.
Trump dismissed concerns about rising oil prices following the US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. He declared that the short-term price increase was "a very small price to pay for security and peace in the United States and around the world," adding that prices would quickly decline once the Iranian nuclear threat was eliminated.
According to CNBC, oil prices posted their strongest one-day gain in nearly 40 years, approaching $120 per barrel. Brent and WTI crude oils rose more than 25% in a day. Asian stock markets fell sharply amid the price surge.
It is also reported that the toxic cloud formed after the strikes on Iranian oil refineries and fuel storage facilities is moving towards Central Asia and China.
US military officials reported that another US service member has died from wounds sustained during Iran's initial counterattack a week ago, bringing the number of US service members killed in the war to seven.
Lebanon's Health Ministry announced that the death toll from Israeli airstrikes over the past week has reached 394. Among the dead are women and children.
Iran's military says at least 104 people were killed and 32 wounded in a US-led attack on an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka last week.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the beginning of "large-scale strikes" against Iranian infrastructure in Tehran and other areas of the country. Despite Israeli claims that the strikes are aimed at military or "terrorist" targets, numerous civilian casualties have been reported.
An Iranian official said overnight US and Israeli strikes hit five oil facilities near Tehran. He stated that the facilities were damaged, but the fire was brought under control. A spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that if the attacks continue, the consequences could push oil prices to more than $200 per barrel.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the strikes on the country's energy infrastructure were a "dangerous new phase" in the conflict and called them a war crime.
As the conflict escalated, Asian stock markets also plummeted. South Korea's KOSPI index even activated its emergency trading halt.
Qatar's Prime Minister called Iran's strikes on the Gulf states a "dangerous miscalculation" in an interview with Sky News.
Donald Trump also said that any decision to end the war would be made jointly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Israeli television, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner canceled their planned trip to Israel on March 10. They had intended to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to CNN, the US may have used a Tomahawk cruise missile to strike a school in southern Iran. Sam Lair, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, reported that this type of missile is visible in the published footage.
According to Iranian authorities, 1,332 people were killed as a result of the US and Israeli attacks.
