Afghanistan accused Pakistan of carrying out an airstrike on a drug addiction hospital in Kabul, claiming at least 400 casualties, CNN reports. Islamabad denies the accusations.
According to Afghan authorities, the strike killed at least 400 people and injured approximately 250. Deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said the strike occurred around 9:00 PM and destroyed a significant portion of the 2,000-bed medical facility.
Kabul called the incident a "crime against humanity." Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that Pakistan had targeted civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that hospital patients were among the dead.
Pakistani authorities denied these accusations. Islamabad stated that the strikes were "precise" and aimed exclusively at military installations and infrastructure associated with militants. They also emphasized that civilian targets were not targeted.
The incident reportedly occurred amid ongoing escalation between the two countries. The fighting, which began in late February, has been accompanied by exchanges of gunfire and airstrikes.
The day before, the two sides exchanged fire on the border, resulting in the deaths of four people in Afghanistan.
The UN Security Council previously called on Afghan authorities to strengthen the fight against terrorism. Meanwhile, Pakistan accuses Kabul of harboring militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban, a charge the Afghans deny.
