Tajikistan has been added to the list of countries whose citizens are required to pay a visa deposit to enter the United States, the US State Department announced.
This regime will take effect for citizens of Tajikistan on January 21. For citizens of 15 countries, it already took effect on January 1, 2026.
The US Department of State announced that individuals planning to travel to the United States for family visits or tourism on B1 or B2 visas are required to post a visa deposit of between $5,000 and $15,000 upon visa approval. The department's decision notes that the specific amount will be determined individually for each applicant during their consular interview.
The decision was made on January 6 and applies to 38 countries. Among the Central Asian states, this list includes Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan.
Individuals entering the United States on these visa categories are not permitted to stay in the country beyond the period authorized by their visa. Exceeding the authorized stay or violating U.S. law will be considered a violation of the Immigration Assurance, which citizens of these countries are required to sign. The corresponding undertaking is documented on Form I-352.
In addition, holders of these visas are required to enter the United States through airports in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. If citizens leave the country within the prescribed timeframe without violating the law and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirms their timely return to their home country, the deposit will be refunded.
