The US State Department has declared the entire Western Hemisphere a "continuous zone of American interests," where Washington will not tolerate threats to national security. The statement was published on the department's official account on the social media site X, Interfax reports.
"This is our hemisphere, and President Trump will not tolerate threats to our security," the statement said.
On Saturday, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured by US special forces in the presidential palace in Caracas during a US military operation and taken to New York to appear in court. The US accuses Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking into the United States.
US President Donald Trump also accused Colombian President Gustavo Petro of involvement in drug trafficking and did not rule out conducting a similar operation in that country.
