On December 12, 2025, during its 80th session, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution, "International Year of Legal Literacy, 2027," initiated by the Republic of Tajikistan. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan.
The document emphasizes the importance of improving legal literacy as a key factor in ensuring justice, effective governance, and sustainable peace. The adoption of the resolution reflects the international community's recognition of the importance of developing a legal culture and legal awareness globally.
The initiative builds on the success of Tajikistan's national Year of Legal Literacy in 2024. Building on this experience, President Emomali Rahmon proposed taking this initiative to the international stage.
The idea of declaring 2027 the International Year of Legal Literacy was announced by the President of Tajikistan during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. In his speech, he emphasized the fundamental role of legal literacy as a foundation for strengthening the rule of law, developing a just society, and promoting peaceful and sustainable development.
The Tajik Foreign Ministry noted that the adoption of the resolution creates additional opportunities for expanding international cooperation in the field of legal education and the exchange of experience between UN member states.
