The war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for over three and a half years, has led to a significant increase in the number of refugees fleeing the country. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Friday, November 21, 2025, approximately 10 million Ukrainians have fled their homes, fleeing the fighting, and have become internally displaced or have fled the country.
In 2025 alone, 122,000 people were forced from their homes by violence. Most of these were women, children, and the elderly from regions near the front lines. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, hundreds of thousands of military personnel and civilians have been killed or wounded, OCHA added.
The UN also drew attention to the plight of people remaining in frontline areas. In the cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in the Donetsk region, approximately 1,500 people, mostly elderly and people with disabilities, remain stranded, lacking regular access to water, electricity, and healthcare. In the city of Lyman, approximately 3,000 people are cut off from humanitarian aid due to ongoing fighting.
The organization places special emphasis on children, one of the most vulnerable groups. Many minors have been repeatedly forcibly displaced, and some have seen the destruction of their schools, homes, and hospitals near areas of conflict.
