In the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States, work is underway on a draft calendar plan for holding championships, tournaments, and cups for 2026, the press service of the Organization's Executive Committee reports.
The Working Group on Holding CIS Sports Championships (Tournaments, Cups) met online on November 19. Representatives from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the CIS Executive Committee participated.
The initiative to organize CIS championships, tournaments, and cups aims to host international sports competitions in individual sports in the Commonwealth countries between the CIS Games, which are held every two years. This initiative has generated considerable interest and has been included in the annual sporting events calendar of the CIS member states.
By the decision of the Council of Heads of Government of the CIS on October 26, 2023, the Regulation on the CIS Championship (Championship, Cup) was approved, which defines the goals, objectives, and procedures for organizing and holding such sporting competitions.
To implement the new project, the Council for Physical Culture and Sports of the CIS Member States has created a separate Working Group for CIS Championships (Tournaments, Cups). One of the group's main tasks is to draft a calendar plan for CIS championships, tournaments, and cups for the upcoming calendar year.
It is noted that CIS championships, tournaments, and cups occupy a significant place among international sporting events in the Commonwealth countries. The number of such competitions is growing annually: in 2024, the Calendar included 10 championships, and in 2025, 26 championships. It is expected that in 2026, the Calendar will include more than 60 CIS championships, tournaments, and cups.
