Tajikistan intends to purchase pedigree yaks from the People's Republic of China. Prospects for implementing this initiative were discussed at a meeting between Tajikistan's Minister of Agriculture, Qurbon Hakimzoda, and China's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Zhang Zhili. The talks took place in Kunming as part of the 10th Meeting of Agriculture Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, according to the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan.
The parties also discussed the possibility of using China as a transit zone for importing yaks from Mongolia. During the meeting, special attention was paid to phytosanitary control, plant quarantine, and the exchange of experience in these areas.
The Chinese side expressed interest in importing a number of agricultural products from Tajikistan, including lemons, cherries, grapes, and dried mulberries.
To develop mutually beneficial cooperation, an initiative was put forward to open a SCO Center for Demonstration of Innovative Agricultural Technologies in Tajikistan, similar to the existing center in Yangling, China.
Following the meeting, the parties agreed to establish a special working group within the existing Tajikistan-China Subcommittee on Agriculture. The working group's responsibilities will include developing specific projects in areas such as plant breeding, seed production, cotton cultivation, plant disease and pest protection, and the implementation of modern technologies in crop production and soil science.
