The Ministry of Education and Science of Tajikistan stated that the sale of school uniforms and school supplies inside educational institutions is strictly prohibited. This was reported by the ministry's press center.
The ministry's statement followed reports on social media about the forced sale of school uniforms and their poor quality.
The Ministry emphasized that it is not involved in the production, provision, or sale of school uniforms. It merely offers recommended clothing samples for students and teachers in accordance with approved guidelines.
According to the Prime Minister's instructions issued in 2020, responsibility for organizing fairs selling school uniforms and necessary supplies has been assigned to the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, the Tajikmatlubot Union, the administrations of GBAO, Sughd and Khatlon regions, the city of Dushanbe, and cities and districts subordinate to the republic. Product quality control is carried out by the Agency for Standardization, Metrology, Certification, and Trade Supervision.
"The fairs should be held outside of educational institutions—in city centers, district centers, and rural jamoats. Their main goal is to create convenient conditions for schoolchildren and parents to access necessary supplies," the ministry said in a statement.
The agency added that citizens with complaints about the quality of school uniforms or their forced sale can contact the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, the Standardization Agency, the Tajikmatlubot Union, and local authorities.
As a reminder, Tajikistan has a "Guideline on Recommended Clothing for Students in General Education Institutions," developed to promote national dress codes and create a unified school environment. This document is advisory in nature and has been amended and updated three times since its inception—in 2007, 2009, and 2018.
