The city of Penjikent has been officially accepted into the World Craft Council in the Suzani category. This was reported by the Khovar news agency, citing the Penjikent Executive Authority.
The decision was made following a visit to the region by a World Council delegation led by Sandeep Kumar, the organization's Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region. During a meeting between the city's mayor, Abduholik Kholikzoda, and Council representatives, the importance of the suzani embroidery tradition, the development of craft centers, and government support for artisans were discussed.
Guests were presented with information about the ancient craft traditions of Penjikent and Sarazm, one of the oldest archaeological sites in the region, which played a key role in the development of Tajik agriculture, urban development, and applied arts.
Council representatives expressed satisfaction with the high level of support for folk crafts in the country and noted that this was an important factor in Penjikent's admission to the organization.
The World Council of Folk Arts and Crafts was founded 60 years ago. Today, it comprises 108 countries, and 74 cities worldwide are designated centers of traditional crafts. The city of Istaravshan, a recognized international center of knife making, was previously added to the organization from Tajikistan.
