President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with President of the Portuguese Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. This was reported by the presidential administration's press service.
During the conversation, the parties discussed prospects for strengthening friendship and cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral formats.
"We positively assess the development of cooperation between Tajikistan and Portugal within the European Union and strive to expand it in a bilateral format," Emomali Rahmon noted, opening the meeting.
Particular attention was paid to issues of expanding political dialogue and contacts at various levels, strengthening the legal framework, and intensifying trade, economic, and investment cooperation.
It was emphasized that the combination of Tajikistan's rich natural and human resources, including green energy sources and rare minerals, with Portugal's advanced technology and capital is of mutual interest.
Cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, including education, healthcare, culture, tourism and academic exchange, was also noted as a priority area.
The presidents exchanged views on strengthening cooperation within the UN, the European Union, the OSCE, and other international organizations. Particular attention was paid to climate change, water issues, and ensuring peace and stability in the face of contemporary global challenges.
