Following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union and NATO, is capable of reclaiming all of its territories within its former borders. The American leader wrote this on the social media platform TruthSocial.
"With time, patience, and financial support from Europe, and particularly NATO, restoring the original borders where this war began is entirely possible," Trump emphasized. He added that Russia has been waging a pointless war for over three and a half years, and that it would take a real military power less than a week to win the conflict, making Russia a "paper tiger."
The US President noted that Ukraine could not only regain its territories but "perhaps go further," while emphasizing that Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin are experiencing serious economic difficulties. Trump also announced his intention to continue NATO arms supplies to Ukraine.
The meeting between the US and Ukrainian leaders took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly and lasted about an hour. In response to questions from reporters, Trump supported the idea of NATO countries shooting down Russian aircraft when they violated the alliance's airspace, but clarified that the US's willingness to assist its allies depended on specific circumstances.
Commenting on the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that if Trump helps end the war, Ukraine is ready to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. When asked a similar question by a journalist, Donald Trump responded succinctly: "Why not?"
The dpa news agency notes that Trump no longer advocates ceding territory to Ukraine, and that the reconsideration of his position became possible after reviewing the military and economic situations in both countries. However, he did not specify whether by "original territory" he meant Crimea, annexed by Russia.
