Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at a closed meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, requested the supply of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, the British newspaper The Telegraph reports, citing diplomatic sources.
According to the publication, Zelenskyy emphasized that the presence of these missiles would help convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table to discuss a possible peace agreement. The Telegraph's sources described the meeting between the presidents as "extremely positive," but Trump's specific response to Zelenskyy's request was not specified.
In an interview with Axios after the meeting, Zelenskyy noted that he had asked the US for a "new weapons system" capable of forcing Russia to negotiate, but did not specify what kind of weaponry he was referring to. According to the Ukrainian leader, Trump responded to Trump's request for a new system by saying, "We'll work on it."
The British newspaper also recalls that former US President Joe Biden had previously rejected a similar request from Ukraine for Tomahawk missiles, as it was believed they were capable of hitting targets in Moscow and could bypass modern Russian air defense systems, which could potentially lead to an escalation of the conflict.
Earlier, in July 2025, The Washington Post reported that Trump had already considered transferring Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, but they were not included in the final list of weapons provided. According to the newspaper's sources, the US could consider delivering the missiles later if it decides to increase pressure on Russia.
The Tomahawk missiles have a range of up to 5,500 kilometers, depending on the modification. By comparison, the ATACMS missiles previously provided to Ukraine have a maximum range of 300 kilometers.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told his European counterparts that Donald Trump's recent shift in tone toward Ukraine should be viewed "as positively as possible." He stated that the US president is extremely dissatisfied with Putin's actions, which ignore attempts to end the war.
