On the night of September 28, Russia carried out a massive air strike on Ukrainian territory, resulting in civilian casualties, the destruction of residential buildings, and damage to critical infrastructure, according to Ukrainian authorities. According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces command, the attack was one of the largest since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of the country.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that Russia used hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles during the airstrike, damaging civilian objects and civilians. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the attack lasted more than 12 hours . The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Russia used 48 missiles and 595 drones , while Ukrainian air defense forces destroyed 43 missiles and 568 drones .
Kyiv and the Kyiv region were subjected to massive strikes. Drones were actively used over the city, and air defense salvos were heard in the sky. According to the Kyiv City Administration, at least four civilians were killed in the attacks, including a 12-year-old girl, and 10 others were injured . Many residents took refuge deep in metro stations.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the partial collapse of a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district, as well as falling debris in the Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Holosiivskyi districts, where damaged and burning cars were reported. Overall, damage was reported in six of the capital's ten districts, and fires broke out in several areas.
Massive strikes also affected other regions of Ukraine. In the Zaporizhia region, one strike hit a private home, injuring 16 people ; the death toll later rose to over 30. Damage to infrastructure was also reported in the Khmelnytskyi region. Air raid sirens were issued in several other regions of Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klymenko, more than 70 people were injured as a result of the massive overnight shelling across the country.
The reaction from neighboring countries was immediate. Specifically, Poland closed airspace over two southeastern cities and scrambled fighter jets in response to the threat posed by the Russian attacks.
Ukrainian authorities and Western allies emphasize that Russia's use of drones and missiles for massive attacks on cities is becoming a key tactic aimed at intimidating civilians and destroying the country's strategically important infrastructure.
