The main republican mosque of Kazakhstan, located in Astana, has officially been given a new name: "Nursultan Meshіtі" ("Nursultan Mosque"). This was announced by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (DUMK).
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Kyrgyz Republic (DUMK) announced that the new name is being officially adopted. Under this name, the mosque will continue to serve the spiritual life of the people, promote mutual respect and solidarity in society, preserve traditional spiritual values, and develop good initiatives.
The main republican mosque in Astana, the construction of which was initiated by the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, opened in August 2022.
It is the largest mosque in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The main prayer hall can accommodate 30,000 people, and together with the surrounding area, the complex can accommodate up to 120,000 visitors at a time.
The height of the four minarets reaches 130 meters, and the height of the main dome is almost 90 meters.
The entrance door is considered one of the tallest wooden doors in the world. It was handcrafted from iroko wood, native to tropical Africa. It stands 12.4 meters tall and weighs approximately 1.5 tons. It is decorated with Kazakh ornaments, while the mosque's façade features white Arabic script on a blue background.
The walls and the interior of the dome are decorated with carvings, Kazakh ornaments, verses of the Koran and prayers.
Speaking at the mosque's opening ceremony, Nazarbayev recalled that he laid the foundation stone for its construction in March 2019—the day before his presidential term ended.
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan announced the mosque's new name on the eve of July 6, Capital Day. This date also coincides with Nursultan Nazarbayev's birthday. In 2026, the first president of Kazakhstan turned 86.
