Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched a massive combined attack on Ukraine on the night of July 2, the bulk of which fell on Kyiv. He added that rescue operations are ongoing in the capital, with specialists clearing rubble, searching for people, and providing assistance to the injured.
According to Zelenskyy, damage was recorded in more than 20 locations in Kyiv. The attack primarily damaged residential buildings. An ambulance station, a research institute, a hotel, and businesses were also damaged.
According to the Ukrainian president, 17 people have been killed so far. More than 90 people have been injured, and all victims are receiving necessary medical care.
Zelenskyy also reported that five people, including one child, were injured in the Kharkiv region. Two more people were wounded in the Kyiv region, where, according to him, strikes also hit civilian infrastructure.
In addition, this night Russian troops launched attacks on the Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as well as on Zaporizhzhia and Cherkasy.
According to the Ukrainian president, Russia launched more than 70 missiles of various types at the country overnight, almost half of which were ballistic, as well as nearly 500 attack drones, including Shahed-class jet drones. He noted that the main strike was directed at Kyiv. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to destroy a significant number of aerial targets, but were unable to fully repel the attack.
Zelenskyy emphasized that strengthening Ukraine's air defense system remains a top priority. He stated that the supply of air defense systems and financial support for the PURL program directly contribute to saving lives. He also expressed gratitude to partner countries for their assistance.
The Ukrainian President added that the implementation of agreements on the production of anti-missile weapons is crucial. Furthermore, Kyiv is counting on a decision by the United States to license the production of Patriot systems and to develop further cooperation in this area.
