Russia launched new strikes on Ukrainian territory, using an Iskander-M ballistic missile and dozens of drones. The Ukrainian Air Force reported this on the morning of May 9.
According to Ukrainian authorities, one ballistic missile and 43 unmanned aerial vehicles were launched at the country's territory. Thirty-four drones were reportedly shot down or suppressed by air defense systems. Missile and nine attack drone strikes were recorded at six locations, as well as debris impacts at two other locations.
The Ukrainian Air Force noted that the attack began on the evening of May 8, but did not specify whether it continued after midnight, when, according to statements from Moscow and Kyiv, the ceasefire was supposed to be in effect.
On the evening of May 8, Russian troops reportedly also attacked civilian infrastructure in the village of Pechenyugi in the Chernihiv region. The attack killed one person and wounded two others.
The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Gandzha, reported strikes on two districts in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to him, in the Nikopol district, the district center, Marhanets, and Chervonohryhorivka communities came under fire. Infrastructure, a kiosk, a store, a cafe, and private homes were damaged.
A 35-year-old man died in the attack. Another victim, a 39-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The 31-year-old man will reportedly undergo outpatient treatment.
Additionally, strikes struck the Dubovikov community in the Sinelnikovsky district. A business and agricultural equipment were damaged there. One person was killed.
In the Chernihiv region, according to local authorities, two more people were killed as a result of the shelling – a father and son who were working on the ground in a border village in the Novgorod-Seversky district during the attack.
First, a 70-year-old man died. His 49-year-old son suffered severe mine blast injuries and burns and later died, despite medical efforts. This was reported by Alexander Seliverstov, head of the Novgorod-Seversky District Military Administration.
Another man, 55, was injured. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that a fire broke out after a drone attack on an agricultural enterprise.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a ceasefire with Ukraine on May 8 and 9. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by calling for a ceasefire to begin as early as the night of May 6.
Despite this, according to Ukrainian authorities, Russian troops continued attacks on several Ukrainian cities. Following this, on the night of May 8, Ukraine reportedly launched strikes on Moscow, Yaroslavl, Rostov-on-Don, and other Russian regions.
On the evening of May 8, US President Donald Trump announced that a three-day ceasefire would be in effect between Russia and Ukraine—May 9, 10, and 11—and that a prisoner exchange would take place.
Later, Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the prisoner exchange and announced that he had ordered Moscow's Red Square to be excluded from Ukraine's list of targets for the Victory Day parade.
