US President Donald Trump will discuss the United States' possible withdrawal from the alliance with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt announced, according to RIA Novosti.
"Perhaps you will hear about this directly from the president following the meeting," she told reporters.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump stated in an interview with the Telegraph that he was seriously considering withdrawing the US from NATO. He cited the alliance's refusal to support the operation against Iran as a reason for this.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly met in Washington on April 8 to discuss the results of the operation against Iran.
According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, NATO has begun discussing the possibility of sending a naval mission to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This came after Washington and Tehran agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
According to Spiegel magazine, earlier that day, Donald Trump spoke by phone with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The conversation, initiated by the German side, focused on the ceasefire between the US and Iran, as well as the future of transatlantic relations.
It is noted that the German authorities intend to prevent a possible split in the alliance, as they are interested in maintaining US military support, including in the context of the Ukrainian conflict.
US Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker previously stated that the US administration is reviewing all issues related to the North Atlantic Alliance, including support for European efforts in Ukraine.
