Renewed fighting on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan has killed at least three people and injured several others in eastern Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities.
The escalation occurred after the end of a brief ceasefire declared during the Muslim holiday of Eid al – Fitr . Pakistani forces reportedly fired dozens of artillery shells at the Narayi and Sarkana districts.
At least two civilians were killed and eight others were wounded as a result of the shelling. The Afghan side also reported one fatality, but this has not yet been confirmed.
Afghan border guards returned fire, claiming to have destroyed three Pakistani military posts. There was no official comment from Pakistan. However, a local Pakistani official accused Afghan forces of initiating firefights in several areas.
Clashes between the two sides were reported to have occurred earlier, in February. On the night of February 27, Afghan authorities announced a massive retaliatory strike against Pakistani military positions on both sides of the Durand Line. At that time, 55 Pakistani soldiers were reported killed.
