Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died at work in his residence in Tehran, the Iranian Fars news agency reported.
According to the agency, he was on duty and in his office at the time of his death. The ayatollah was killed early on the morning of Saturday, February 28. The agency called the attack on Khamenei "cowardly," emphasizing that previously published media claims that the Iranian leader was hiding in a safe house are unfounded.
Khamenei's death during the US-Israeli operation was also confirmed by the Iranian news agencies Tasnim, IRNA, ISNA, and Mehr. Following the ayatollah's death, the government declared 40 days of mourning and seven days of public holidays.
On Saturday, November 28, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also reported "multiple signs" pointing to the death of the Iranian leader. He claimed that Tel Aviv had targeted Khamenei's residence, which was destroyed.
