Representatives from Russia and Ukraine will resume US-mediated talks in Geneva on Tuesday, February 17. According to dpa, the Ukrainian side intends to focus on humanitarian issues and security guarantees, while the Russian delegation plans to discuss territorial concessions.
The plane carrying the Russian delegation, led by Vladimir Medinsky, aide to the Russian president, has already landed in Geneva, Interfax reported. According to the agency, the flight lasted more than eight hours, passing over Turkey, the eastern Mediterranean, and Italy.
A delegation from Kyiv, led by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, arrived in Geneva on February 16. Umerov announced on Telegram that the agenda had been agreed upon and the team was ready to work. He noted that constructive work and substantive meetings on security and humanitarian issues were expected to advance a dignified and sustainable peace.
Last week, Umerov stated that one of the goals of the next round of negotiations is to achieve a partial ceasefire to protect Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
US President Donald Trump previously called on Kyiv to reach an agreement with Moscow as soon as possible. On February 16, answering journalists' questions aboard Air Force One, he stated that Ukraine should sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible.
On February 16, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov announced that the Russian delegation to the consultations on Ukraine in Geneva would be expanded. He specified that Vladimir Medinsky would lead the delegation. It also included Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and Igor Kostyukov, Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. According to dpa, the group consists of more than 20 people.
In addition to Rustem Umerov, the Ukrainian delegation includes Kirill Budanov, head of the office of Volodymyr Zelenskyy; his deputy, Serhiy Kyslytsya; deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Vadym Skibitsky; chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Andriy Gnatov; and head of the ruling Servant of the People party faction, David Arakhamia.
The Geneva dialogue is scheduled to continue until February 18. Two previous rounds of US-mediated talks held in Abu Dhabi failed to produce a breakthrough.
