The expert group meeting to finalize the draft Joint Action Plan of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to Prevent the Spread of Tuberculosis for 2027–2030 was held online on January 22, 2026, according to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.
The event was attended by experts from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as representatives of the CIS Executive Committee.
The set of measures envisaged by the draft Plan is based on an analysis of the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis and a forecast of its development in the CIS countries until 2030. The document's implementation is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of cooperation in combating the consequences of the disease.
The main goal of the draft Plan is to further develop cooperation between Commonwealth countries in implementing programs to reduce the burden of tuberculosis in society. Specialists from CIS countries intend to improve disease prevention methods, including for high-risk groups, develop coordinated approaches to the early detection of all forms of tuberculosis, and ensure universal access to drug-resistance testing, including for migrants.
The Plan places particular emphasis on ensuring effective treatment for individuals with various forms of tuberculosis. Several provisions of the document are dedicated to improving the professional training of physicians and nursing staff, including primary care workers, in the early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of tuberculosis patients.
Countries plan to commit to reducing tuberculosis incidence by 20% and mortality by 35% compared to 2015, and to ensuring 100% coverage of people with the disease with medical and social benefits.
During the discussion, participants noted the need to expand the use of educational centers collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Commonwealth countries, and discussed conducting online training courses with the support of the WHO Regional Office for Europe.
Representatives of the Russian Federation informed their colleagues about preparations for the 2nd International Congress of CIS Respiratory Health Specialists, "Respiratory Medicine in the CIS Countries: Focus on Socially Significant Infections," which will take place June 3–5, 2026, and invited all interested parties to participate.
Following the meeting, the participants finalized and agreed on the draft Action Plan for the Prevention of the Spread of Tuberculosis for 2027–2030 and the Decision of the CIS Economic Council on this issue.
