US President Donald Trump has initiated a project to create a new international organization called the "Peace Council," in which countries would have to pay one billion US dollars for a seat on the body, Bloomberg reports, citing a review of the draft charter.
Under the terms of the draft proposed by the American side, the decision on which states will be invited to participate in the Peace Council will be made personally by Trump, who will assume the post of chairman of the organization.
According to the draft charter, decisions within the Peace Council will be made by a majority vote of participating countries. Each participating state will be allowed to hold office for no more than three years and will have one vote. However, the three-year membership term will not apply to states that contribute more than $1 billion in cash to the Peace Council within the first year after the charter comes into force.
The charter document states that the Peace Council is an international organization whose purpose is "to promote stability, restore sound and legitimate governance, and ensure lasting peace in areas affected by conflict or threatened by conflict."
As Bloomberg notes, critics of the initiative express concerns that the creation of a Peace Council could effectively serve as an alternative to the United Nations and limit the participation of countries with less financial resources, turning the organization into a tool of influence for select states.
