Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump at a meeting at the White House, Interfax reports.
"I presented the Nobel Peace Prize medal to the President of the United States," EFE quoted her as saying.
Trump accepted the gift and thanked Machado in a social media post, calling the decision "a wonderful gesture of mutual respect." He did not specify what he planned to do with the medal.
Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize last year. Trump, for his part, made no secret of his desire to receive the award. He said he deserved it because he "stopped eight wars."
The Nobel Committee warned earlier this week that handing over the medal would not automatically make Trump the peace prize laureate.
"The medal may change hands, but the Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot be replaced," the committee said in a statement.
The Guardian newspaper, in turn, reported that, according to analysts, such a gift to Trump is an attempt by Machado to preserve his chances of coming to power in Venezuela.
