On the night of Friday, January 9, the Russian Armed Forces launched a massive attack on Kyiv using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The strikes damaged multi-story residential buildings, with four deaths and 19 injuries reported. Among the dead was a medical worker who responded to a call in the Darnytskyi district where a UAV had struck a multi-story residential building, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated.
One of the strikes hit a residential high-rise building in the Dniprovskyi district of Kyiv. A fire was reported at a shopping center in the Desnyanskyi district. A 24-story residential building was damaged in the Pecherskyi district.
According to Klitschko, damage to critical infrastructure in the city has resulted in power and water supply outages.
In the Lviv region, a Russian military unit damaged a critical infrastructure facility, according to Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the regional military administration. According to Ukrainian media, the Stryiske gas field and underground gas storage facility may have been the Russian army's target.
Several hours before the attack, monitoring channels reported "atypical activity" in the area of the Russian Kapustin Yar test site, from where the Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile was launched into the Dnieper River in November 2024.
The Ukrainian Air Force stated that the missile fired at Lviv was traveling at 13,000 kilometers per hour. There is no official confirmation yet of the use of the Oreshnik missile. The missile's type will be determined after all its components have been examined, the Ukrainian Armed Forces noted.
