On December 23, 2025, a landmark event took place in Ganyu Port, Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province: the specialized salmon farm vessel Suhai-1 released its first salmon fry, marking the beginning of a deep-sea aquaculture project. This was reported by chinadaily.com.cn .
The vessel is 249.8 meters long and has a usable water capacity for aquaculture of 83,000 cubic meters. It houses 15 closed fishing tanks. Once fully operational, the annual salmon production volume is expected to exceed 8,000 tons.
The Suhai-1 vessel frees the industry from the limitations of traditional stationary marine cages, which are dependent on natural conditions. Its autonomous navigation allows the vessel to select optimal waters for fish rearing. Seawater is continuously fed into the tanks, providing ideal conditions for fish growth. This approach effectively avoids natural hazards such as typhoons, and creates a stable, safe, and controlled environment through detailed management and intelligent control.
The vessel is equipped with rapid processing systems and freshness preservation technologies, ensuring high fish quality. The ship-to-shore communication system shortens the time it takes to deliver fish to the counter.
After releasing 400,000 salmon fry, Suhai-1 will head to the open sea to begin large-scale rearing and production. This batch of fish is expected to be available for sale next summer. The commissioning of Suhai-1 will significantly increase China's salmon self-sufficiency.
