In Afghanistan, four young men were arrested for appearing in public dressed as characters from the popular British TV series "Peaky Blinders," according to the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
According to the ministry, all those detained are friends in their 20s. They are accused of "promoting foreign culture." Ministry spokesman Saif-ur-Islam Khyber emphasized that the young men were imitating movie characters, which is contrary to Islamic values and Afghan culture. "We have our own religion, culture, and values. At the cost of numerous sacrifices, we have protected this country from the spread of harmful cultures," Khyber stated.
According to him, after their arrest, the young people underwent a short-term rehabilitation program and were released.
The friends were often seen strolling the streets in outfits modeled after the Shelby family from the Netflix series. Videos and photos of them walking shoulder to shoulder in their costumes circulated on Afghan social media in the days before their arrest. One of the young men said that locals approached them for photos and expressed approval of their appearance, but negative comments were ignored.
In a video released by the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, one of the detainees expressed regret over his decision to wear Western clothing: "From today on, I will no longer engage in such sinful acts."
