Tensions have flared up on the border between Thailand and Cambodia, with both countries exchanging strikes on each other's territory, killing one Thai soldier and injuring two others, local media reported.
According to the Thai Air Force Spokesperson's Office, fighting began on Monday morning at approximately 5:05 a.m. local time (1:05 a.m. Moscow time), when Cambodian troops opened fire on Thai territory. The Thai side responded in accordance with the rules of engagement, the Thai Air Force noted.
Major General Vinthai Suvari reported that at around 7:00 a.m. (3:00 a.m. Moscow time), Cambodian troops shelled other border areas, including the Anupong military base. As a result of the shelling, one Thai soldier was killed and two others were wounded.
In response, Thailand used air power to strike military targets in several areas of Cambodia in order to suppress the positions of Cambodian fire support forces using artillery.
Earlier on Sunday, Cambodian troops also attacked several border areas of Thailand, after which the army command ordered residents of four border provinces to evacuate. Thai authorities estimate that approximately 70% of the border population has been evacuated.
The Cambodian Ministry of Defense accused Thailand of violating the joint peace declaration signed between the two countries. The escalating conflict continues to threaten stability in the border regions of both countries.
