The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Italy calling for an Olympic Truce during the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, RBC reported, citing the ANSA news agency.
Presenting the resolution, Giovanni Malago, President of the 2026 Olympic Organising Committee, said: “In an era of growing divisions and conflicts, sport and the Olympic Games can offer a beacon of hope, an alternative to rivalry and discord.”
The Olympic Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo from 6 to 22 February 2026.
On September 19, the International Olympic Committee announced that Russian athletes will be able to participate in the 2026 Games under the same conditions as the Paris Olympics. To qualify, athletes must pass a selection process and receive approval from a special commission.
The tradition of the Olympic Truce, known in Ancient Greece as the "ekecheria," emerged in the 8th century BC and was a sacred principle of the Olympic Games. In 1992, the International Olympic Committee revived this tradition, calling on all nations to observe the Olympic Truce.
The adoption of the resolution by the UN General Assembly confirms international support for the idea of using sport and the Olympic Games as a means of strengthening peace and promoting dialogue between states.
