King Charles III of Great Britain knighted 50-year-old footballer David Beckham. The ceremony took place at Windsor Palace in Berkshire, the BBC reports.
Beckham was knighted for his services to football and British society. The former England captain expressed pride in this prestigious honor, noting, "People know how patriotic I am—I love my country. I've always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I've been fortunate to travel all over the world, and all anyone wants to talk to me about is our monarchy. I'm proud of that."
Beckham was accompanied at the ceremony by his wife, Victoria, and his parents, Sandra and David. Victoria Beckham, who was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2017 for services to fashion, personally designed the suit he wore at the event. "King Charles was very impressed with my suit," the footballer remarked.
During his career, David Beckham played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan, PSG, and Los Angeles Galaxy. With United, he won the English Premier League six times and the Champions League in 1999. Beckham played 115 times for the England national team, scoring 17 goals.
David Beckham is currently a co-owner of the American club Inter Miami, for which Lionel Messi plays.
