A shootout between Bundeswehr troops and police occurred in Bavaria during a training exercise, state police reported. The incident occurred near the town of Erding, northeast of Munich, and was the result of a misunderstanding between the parties.
According to law enforcement, on the evening of October 22, a report of an armed man near Erding was received by the police. A large police force was dispatched to the scene. At the same time, a scheduled Bundeswehr military police exercise, Marshal Power 2025 , was taking place in the region, involving approximately 500 military personnel, as well as approximately 300 police officers, firefighters, and rescue workers.
Local residents, uninformed about the training exercises, saw armed men and reported them to the police. Law enforcement officers, unaware of the maneuvers, arrived in full combat readiness. The soldiers, in turn, mistook the police's arrival for part of a training exercise and opened fire with blanks. The police responded with live ammunition, believing they were dealing with a real threat.
The shootout lasted several minutes. No civilians were injured. One soldier was slightly wounded and hospitalized. He was later discharged. The scene was cordoned off, and a police helicopter arrived.
A police statement attributed the incident to a "misinterpretation of events." Authorities assured that there was no threat to the public. The Bavarian State Criminal Investigation Office has been appointed to investigate the incident, and the Bundeswehr is assisting the investigation.
According to the Bundeswehr press service, the goal of the Marshal Power 2025 exercise is to practice cooperation between military police and civilian agencies, including law enforcement and rescue services. The maneuvers are taking place from October 22 to 29 on rural roads and in populated areas northeast of Munich.
