Tajik authorities have repatriated more than four thousand students studying abroad due to the risk of their recruitment by international terrorist organizations. This was announced by Saymumin Yatimov, Chairman of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of the Republic of Tajikistan, at a Commonwealth of Independent States ( CIS ) conference on countering terrorism and extremism taking place in Dushanbe. His words were reported by TASS .
According to the head of the special service, the students were targeted by terrorist organizations and some foreign religious educational institutions. However, Yatimov did not specify the period for which the statistics on returned students were provided.
He emphasized that security threats to CIS countries stem from Syria , where many Central Asian nationals are participating in armed conflicts, gaining combat experience. Therefore, Tajikistan is taking decisive measures to counter these challenges and threats.
The head of the State Committee for National Security also noted that migrant workers remain a vulnerable group for recruitment by terrorist organizations. According to him, extremist cells are becoming more active in their efforts to destabilize the situation in the Commonwealth countries.
"Over the past few years, international terrorist organizations have been establishing sleeper cells in the region. Recruitment is concentrated primarily among migrant workers, the most vulnerable segment of the population, exploiting regional mentalities to spread radical ideology and politicize Islam," explained Saimumin Yatimov.
