Avalanches were the most common natural phenomenon in Tajikistan in the first half of 2026. Over the first six months, 508 avalanches were recorded across the country. This was reported at a press conference by the Tajik Emergency Situations Committee.
According to the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, a total of 741 natural disasters occurred in the country during the reporting period.
Mudflows were the second most common event, with 123 occurrences . Additionally, 27 strong winds, 27 rockfalls, 26 earthquakes, 10 landslides, 11 heavy rains, four floods, four heavy snowfalls, and one thunderstorm were recorded.
Although avalanches were the most common type of natural disaster, avalanches, mudflows, and strong winds combined caused the greatest damage to the country's economy and population. Total material damage exceeded 52.8 million somoni , and 12 people died as a result of the natural disasters.
The Emergency Situations Committee noted that, in conditions of high natural hazard, constant monitoring of avalanche- and mudflow-prone areas continues, and preventative measures are being implemented to reduce risks to the population and economic facilities.
